We are currently seeking a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in the San Francisco Bay Area (preferred). The CFO will report to the Company President and work with the executive management team, including the President, Chief Operating Officer, Operations Coordinator, and Board of Directors. Functional responsibilities will include oversight of all financial operations and corporate accounting, financial planning/analysis/budgeting, risk management, treasury, contract review/administration, Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) and 401(k) administration, and insurance/risk management. Leadership responsibilities include managing the accounting team.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

This position is a part of the senior management team and is intended to play a major role in the future growth and development of the Company. Primary responsibilities are as follows:

  • Develop and execute financial strategies that support the Company’s long-term objectives and growth initiatives.
  • Direct and manage (either directly or via staff) all cash management, investments, insurance, budgeting, and financial reporting, and help drive and evaluate the company’s financial strategy, opportunities, and hiring needs.
  • Manage, review, and approve all Company contracts.
  • Update and improve the system of financial controls, processes, procedures, and metrics as necessary to enable more streamlined financial review, monitoring, and approval.
  • Ensure cash flow is compatible with operations by overseeing day-to-day accounting, recording, reporting, and internal-control activities of the Company.
  • Maintain primary relationships with the Company’s banking representatives, accounting firm, corporate attorney, and business insurance broker.
  • Direct and manage the use of space, equipment, and other EKI resources and capital within the context of the overall Company, regional offices, and/or business unit budgets.
  • Play a key role in the Company’s professional risk management.
  • Develop an understanding of the Company’s ESOP ownership structure (a mix of ESOP and privately held shares) and identify and implement strategies to continue the long-term health of the ESOP.
  • Review all facility leases, make recommendations to the Board of Directors, and review and approve all equipment leases.
  • Manage finance personnel and oversee financial IT systems, including preparing accurate, timely reports to ensure compliance with relevant regulatory and other external entities (e.g., banks, taxing authorities, corporate accountant firm, annual valuation consultant).
  • Prepare regular financial reports and analysis as requested by the President and Board of Directors.
  • Prepare, update, and monitor the Operating and Capital Budgets as approved by Management and the Board of Directors.
  • Formulate and implement policies to protect and utilize Company assets.
  • Oversee the direction and management of the accounting team with respect to invoicing, accounts receivable, and accounts payable.
  • Direct, manage, and streamline payroll, time, and expense reporting processes as necessary to ensure compliance with state and regulatory salary and wage requirements.
  • Assume other special activities and responsibilities from time to time as requested by the President or Board of Directors.

The Successful Candidate Must Have:

  • Undergraduate degree in business with CPA and/or MBA credentials.
  • 10+ years of experience in financial management, with the bulk of that experience within a professional service or consulting-related environment.
  • Prior experience with an employee-owned company.
  • Prior experience with an ESOP-owned company is preferred.
  • Prior experience with accounting for federal, state, and local government contracts.
  • Proven success in managing the financial affairs of a multi-office, multi-state, growing professional service firm.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI).
  • Experience with Deltek Ajera accounting software is preferred but not required.

Leadership/Communication/Organizational Skills:

  • Understanding the requirements of successful financial management in an A&E firm.
  • Personal attributes should include a collaborative management style, an ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and an ability to balance the open, free-form culture of the business with appropriate financial controls and discipline.
  • Ability to have a strong, candid relationship with the President, COO, and senior management.
  • Experience interacting with other functional groups, specifically coordination with financial aspects related to Human Resources.
  • Strong sense of personal accountability, integrity, and timely follow-through.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and listening); proven ability to solicit and incorporate feedback. An energetic leader who is engaged with staff at all levels. Able to communicate complex financial concepts to wide audiences.
  • Ability to deal directly and fairly with discord and disagreement, provide direct, clear feedback, and lead and mentor the accounting team.
  • Understanding and experience with strategic planning to meet established goals, including setting, prioritizing, and evaluating goals.
  • Ability to focus on the big picture, including proactively identifying issues and developing potential solutions that affect the Company.

The expected compensation range for this position is $160,000 – $240,000 annually, depending upon skills, experience, education, and geographical location.
